Aug 26, 2015 - If you work at an office, you probably have several printers added to your computer that are network printers, i.e. Remove Network Printers from Windows via Registry Editor. I'm trying to do uninstall a printer driver using the command line in Windows XP. I've figured out that I should use this command:

(Funny thing here, if i type /v 'Windows XP' as it says in the help for printUIEntry it doesn't work at all.)

When executing this command I get an error message saying:

Operation could not be completed. The specified printer driver is currently in use.

When I try to uninstall the printer 'manually' with either the uninstall tool or just deleting it in 'Printers and Faxes' in the Control panel it works fine. Does anyone know of a way to force the deletion or maybe stop the drivers first? (It might be worth noting that the printer is not in use.)

You can use regedit and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionPrintPrinters and delete the print driver key from there manually. Once you do that just restart the print spooler and your ready to go. This will leave the files behind, but will remove the driver from the lists.

The issue is that some user on the system has the printer installed and if you simply delete that printer from the user you can then delete the driver without issue. Using the registry method you can delete drivers that do things like cause the print spooler to crash, as managing the drivers requires the service, wonderful chicken and egg issue if you ever run in to it.

Solution:

1. Look in Programs and Features and uninstall any program that correlates to the printer driver to be removed.
2. Open Devices and Printers and if still present, remove the printer driver by right-clicking it and choosing 'Remove device.'

1. Open the Print Server Properties dialog window by doing one of the following:
   • Click the Start menu and in the search field type printui /s /t2 and then press Enter or click it in the search list.
   • Press WINDOWS-R on the keyboard to bring up the Run window, type in printui /s /t2 and then press Enter or click OK.
   • Press the WINDOWS key on the keyboard to display the Start screen, type in printui /s /t2 and then click it in the search list.
   • From the Start menu or the Start screen:
     1. Open Devices and Printers.
     2. Select any printer and then click 'Print server properties' at the top of the window.
     3. Click on the Drivers tab.
   • For Windows XP systems:
     1. Click Start > Control Panel > Printers and Faxes.
     2. Click the File menu and choose 'Server Properties.'
     3. Click on the Drivers tab.
2. Select the printer driver to uninstall.
3. Click the Remove button.
4. Select 'Remove driver and driver package' and click OK.

Note: Removing the driver package will clear all driver installation files for that device, leaving no reference to the printer that Windows could possibly use to auto-reinstall again. Windows XP does not have this extra choice.

If a message appears about access denied or the printer being in use and the driver or any installed program is not found that would account for this, restart the computer. If the driver still will not remove, restart the computer in a diagnostic startup and then use the printui /s /t2 command to remove the driver package(s) (see Use Windows diagnostic mode to troubleshoot issues with Autodesk software). Restart back to normal mode before installing the printer again.
