This guide for Diablo II will show you how to install and run Median XL with D2SE, PlugY and D2MultiRes together.

Recently someone asked about getting multires working with Diablo II 1.13c, and I remembered that about 6 months ago I had spent a day and half figuring out how and was finally able to get it working. I searched around my HDD today and found the modified D2 1.13c multires install, so I retraced my steps and figured out how to do it from. The most popular Diablo II overhaul modification. 1.Important things to know:

• This setup doesn’t work with the latest MedianXL 2017. You need to get previous version of the Median XL.
• This setup doesn’t work with the latests Diablo 2 patch (1.14 and above). You need to have 1.13c version.
• Latest official Diablo 2 installers come with 1.14 patch. Thus you need to have your Diablo 2 DVDs or get the installer from sources in the Downloads section and then upgrade it to the 1.13c patch.
• Install Diablo 2 to a place except Program Files folder. Program Files gives problems to some users. It is best to avoid it from the start.

2.Getting the Diablo 2 version we need:

• Install first 1.12a installer and then 1.13c patch.
• If the game tries to upgrade to a newer version after installing 1.13c press “Escape” until you cancel it.
• Absolutely make sure you have 1.13c version now.

3.Preparing the Windows:
Now we will need Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package. Download it according to your Operating System (32 bit or 64 bit):

4.Installing D2SE Mod Manager
Download and install D2SE Mod Manager.

5.Solving Compatibiliy Issues:
Go to the Diablo II installation folder. You will set compatibility options for 3 programs:

• D2SE.exe
• D2VidTst.exe
• Game.exe

Check the options:

• Run in Windows XP SP2 Compatibility Mode
• Run as administrator

Uncheck the option:
Disable Display Scaling On High DPI Settings

6.Median XL files for D2SE Mod Manager
Before the main Median XL mod we need Median XL D2SE files. Download and extract it to your Diablo 2 installation folder.

7.Median XL Ultimative XVI.1 mod
Download the Median XL Ultimative XVI.1 and extract the archive to “Diablo_Installation_Path/MODS/Median XL”

8.D2MultiRes mod
Download the D2MultiRes and extract the archive to “Diablo_Installation_Path/MODS/Median XL”

9.Configuring D2MultiRes
Open file PlugY.ini in the “Diablo_Installation_Path/MODS/Median XL/PlugY.ini” and change the lines like below:

• DllToLoad=D2MultiRes_113c.dll
• ActiveCommands=1

9.Configuring D2SE Mod Manager

• Launch D2SE Mod Manager, select MedianXL and set Options:
  • DDRaw
  • Windowmode
  • Use PlugY
• Click Start Plugin and play.

10.Removing Borders
Now since we are running on windowed mod we can see some extra software to remove the window borders:

Therefore, make sure that you follow these steps carefully.

Hey all!

Recently someone asked about getting multires working with Diablo II 1.13c, and I remembered that about 6 months ago I had spent a day and half figuring out how and was finally able to get it working. I searched around my HDD today and found the modified D2 1.13c multires install, so I retraced my steps and figured out how to do it from scratch. I grabbed the D2 multires files off some website, don't remember which one, but that's ok because you won't need to do the same, simply download the instructions below.

Important facts:

• Not compatible with BH (or any other known maphack, due to the strange mix of version DLLs to make multires work)

• Cannot connect to bnet or Slashdiablo (read below for my guess as to why)

• Clicks around the edge of the screen sometimes don't register to well

• Screenshots work just fine

• Fullscreen mode didn't work for me, only windowed mode

• Limited widescreen support (not all resolutions available)

About connecting to Slashdiablo:

Back when I got this working originally, I was able to successfully connect to Slashdiablo and play a few hours. I just tried today and I get the 'unable to identify your application version' error. I believe something changed when the server was moved/upgraded a few months ago, the admins will have to disable whatever check is in place because there's no way to connect to Slashdiablo with the game patched to be multires-compatible. :(

Note that I performed these steps in a VM that had a clean installation of Windows 7 Home Premium, to make sure they worked 'from scratch'.

• Install Diablo II and LOD from the bnet installers, I used these keys I found online: D2: 4EK2896KM6J8MYW98YWTH2CD6M D2 LoD: 7HRMZ9WF6NTV482F9EXXEK2HTT

• DO NOT CONNECT TO BATTLE.NET, it will auto patch your game to the wrong version.

• Download patch 1.13c (LODPatch_113c.exe) directly from Blizzard at: http://ftp.blizzard.com/pub/diablo2exp/patches/PC/

• Manually patch by double clicking D2Patch_113c.exe

• Download the files that will make 1.13c multires-capable from my Dropbox account here: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/1868122/slashdiablo/multires/multires.zip

• Unzip that file directly into your Diablo II install directory, overwriting when prompted. NOTE: If I were you I'd first make a copy of my D2 directory before doing this, for backup purposes!!

• Create a shortcut to D2MultiResGame.exe and add the '-w' flag to run it in windowed mode.

• Start the game, create any single player game, and change your resolution as desired, enjoy!

Disclaimer:

I was able to get this working after hours of fiddling, if these steps don't work for you then I don't know how to fix it. :( I didn't write the multires hack, I only found it online and cobbled a working solution together.
