The latest third-generation Kia Carens MPV, which debuted at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, is getting a little long in the tooth now – so a facelifted version will be introduced at the 2016 version of the same show.

Not much to distinguish new from old on the outside, apart from a more aggressive front bumper design, new front fog lights and a new grille – the latter gets a thicker chrome border that now meets the headlights (à la Sorento). The rear also sees the addition of a redesigned rear bumper and new combination tail lights. Three new 16-, 17- and 18-inch alloy wheels and a new Mysterious Blue colour choice complete the revamp.

Inside, there are new seat upholstery options (including a knit cloth pattern and diamond-woven leather), metallic and gloss black accents and – unusual for a family-friendly seven-seat MPV – faux carbon fibre trim. Tech-wise, Kia has added new infotainment systems with 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreens, incorporating navigation, Kia Connected Services, a reverse camera and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support.

Mechanically, the Carens remains unchanged, but new for 2017 is an Eco Pack for the 114 hp 1.7 litre CRDi diesel, adding Idle Stop/Go (ISG), Michelin low rolling resistance tyres and revised gear ratios. As such, the MPV is now capable of producing carbon dioxide emissions as low as 109 grammes per kilometre on the European NEDC cycle, with the six-speed manual transmission.
